Silvia Federici acknowledges the relationship between class and gender to political status, to be a very unjust one. She talks about the enclosures, where people were getting their land taken away. People had worked in those lands for a living, but with the enclosures it turned their lives around. Workers were not getting wages in the proper manner that they should’ve. But people did not keep their arms crossed. Even women took it into their own hands to try to bring some justice for all.
For women it was more significant, for them it was their only means of an income. The enclosure brought the value of women down, by taking away laws that protected their rights to protest. They were tring to silenece women so they would not be able to take jobs “for” men. Women were left with no option but to go to being the typical mothers. It was again, a way of oppressing the power women have when they come together. The goal was to degrade women, as an effort to get some control back. Men knew that if all doors were closed for women, they would have to become completely dependent on the abilities of the men. With the development of capitalism, everyone had to fight for what they wanted. Nothing was to be shared equally into everyone, women had analyzed this and decided to work for themselves to be independent. But with the enclosure women were obligated to follow whatever the men wanted. Any image that they had built in the period before, was now being taken away. Categorizing women of the weaker sex amd therefore could get the same treatment in the job as mem did. But in reality, they were being exploited by these men and helping them get to where they wanted to be which is very ironic.
The women’s movement was an event that brought many people together, no matter the gender, class, or race. Just like Angela Davis dicussed in chapter 3, the movement was tested in so many levels but at the end it accpmplished a lot. Women like Elizabeth Cady Stanton, proved that big issues like this affect everyone no matter their race or class. She had realized how women not only of color, but women in general had faced monumental challenges for many decades. She proved how just like men, women have the ability to fulfill any expectantions. Wether it was to be an exemplar mother or a lawyer, Staton defied the view society had at this time. She faced the same struggle every other women at the time faced. Being a fly on the wall, in a world dominated by man, made her and many others join the abolition movement. She helped women open their eyes and notice the similar situations they were all in, it was a wake up call for everyone to fight for equality. But not only were women in the movement, men were also trying to fight for equality. At this time, equality was a strange concept that was impossible to accomplish if society didn’t come together. Davis was trying to tell us that major issues regarding our basic human rights, will become e everyone’s issue sooner or later. We become all one, equality is something we all enjoy wethee it affects us directly or indirectly. As soon as equality becomes something believable for everyone, it will become a reality for all. Organized movements will always be the right weapon agaisnt any oppression figures or groups. We must first become educated and use our intelect to fight agaisnt any injustice. Davis used Stanton to show how race, gender, and class are all connected in a harmonized way.
Hello everyone, my name is Karla Flores. I am a freshman, trying to major in nursing. I picked nursing because it gives the me opportunity to help people directly, which is something I enjoy doing. But I’ve also wanted to pick a career that would keep me busy most of the time, because I personally function better as a person when I have my mind occupied. Nursing is a great major that would provide me with everything I want in the future. I was born in The Dominican Republic, but I moved here by the age of eleven. I picked this class because it fulfills one of the requirements to graduate. But I want to also take the opportunity to learn more about what factors shape the way different groups, view gender and sexuality. Also, how have the views on gender identity and sexuality changed over the time and why.
