% Karla Flores completed

Hello everyone, my name is Karla Flores. I am a freshman, trying to major in nursing.  I picked nursing because it gives the me opportunity to help people directly, which is something I enjoy doing. But I’ve also wanted to pick a career that would keep me busy most of the time, because I personally function better as a person when I have my mind occupied. Nursing is a great major that would provide me with everything I want in the future. I was born in The Dominican Republic, but I  moved here by the age of eleven. I picked this class because it fulfills one of the requirements to graduate. But I want to also take the opportunity to learn more about what factors shape the way different groups, view gender and sexuality. Also, how have the views on gender identity and sexuality changed over the time and why.

% Naylin Rivera completed

Good evening everyone. My name is Naylin Rivera. Although I was born and raised in America my entire life, I am of Puerto Rican descent. I have a love for animals and a passion for music and attending concerts. Currently, I work part-time as a sales associate in a retail store not too far from the city. Originally, I was a student at LaGuardia Community College, but as my career interests expanded and altered I made the decision to transfer to Hunter College. As of now, I am seeking a Bachelor’s degree in economics. Nonetheless, I am still very much interested in finding opportunities to work alongside all types of exotic and domestic animals in the future. My main reason for taking Introduction to Gender and Sexuality Studies is because the class happens to fulfill part of the Hunter Core requirements. However, I am very interested in exploring the roles women have had throughout different time periods and how past events have impacted the lives of women in this day and age. I also want to have a deeper understanding of the injustices women have faced and what actions were taken by women in response to them.

% Kimberly Walters completed

Hello everyone! My name is Kimberly Walters, but most people just call me Kim. I’m a sophomore here at Hunter, and I currently don’t have a major declared but I’ve been thinking about majoring in chemistry. I am a first generation American. My mom is from Guyana, and my dad is from Jamaica. I’ve visited both countries when I was younger and it was such an amazing experience to see where I come from. I have an extremely large family that I am so grateful for. My grandparents on my mom’s side have 16 children, so I grew up with many cousins. My family isn’t perfect but we are very close. I’m from long island and I lived here most of my life, but I have spent a portion of my life living in Georgia. I liked living there but I much rather live here.

I decided to take this class so I can get a better understanding of gender politics. Everything that I know is derived from what I see online, and I would prefer to learn more about this in an educational environment. I’ve seen first hand how there is inequality between men and women, and I’m interested to know about the history of this. From the first day of class alone I can tell that I have so much more to learn and I’m excited to become more educated on this topic.

% Marissa Ippolito completed

Hi everyone, my name is Marissa Ippolito and I recently transferred to Hunter College. I am an art major looking to specialize in sculpture. At my prior college I had taken my first ever masculinities course and grew a much deeper interest in gender studies when I realized the role it plays in life as well as how I perceive myself as well as others. My goal is to expand my knowledge in this subject further by taking a Women’s gender course and applying my new findings in my art.

% Andrea Anketell completed

Hi my name is Andrea Anketell, and I’m a new transfer sophomore here at Hunter College. I’m from Shoreham, New York, a small town on the east end of Long Island. I intend to double major in media studies and film studies in hopes of becoming a film/television producer or director. I’m really excited to take this class because I think gender and sexuality is a large part of the media and film industry, and sometimes can be misrepresented; therefore I hope what I learn can really help me with the projects I work on in my future career.

% Felix Saldana completed

Hello, my name is Felix. I just finished my associates in science at Laguardia Community College and transferred here to Hunter College.  I am most likely majoring in Physical Anthropology as a gateway into a PA program, but haven’t quite figured it all out yet.  I became interested in gender and sexuality a couple years ago when a friend told me she was non-binary, which I learned means that she does not express her gender with being feminine or masculine, it’s kind of a mix of both.  I also learned that gender does not define sexuality and vice versa.  To be honest it’s confusing because I have known about gay, lesbian, and transsexuals, practically all my life, but it was this new term that made me want to understand more about what gender is really, how it’s different from sexuality, and how we are all affected by the these roles of man or woman. I believe that we humans are constantly evolving and that gender and sexuality perhaps is evolving alongside us.  I’m hoping to learn more about the history and evolution of gender  and sexuality roles so that it can aid me in my future career and for personal growth. Overall, I am excited for my first semester at Hunter. Good luck to all of  you!
