Good evening everyone. My name is Alfie Corteza, and I am a first-generation born American, with my parents immigrating from the Philippines. If you haven’t had a clue as to where the Philippines is located, it is approximately an hour flight south of Hong Kong. As of right now, I am in my 1st semester of my Sophomore year and have yet to declare a major. However, I hope whatever I major in is related to automobiles as I have been a fan of motorsports at a very young age.
I signed up for a women’s and gender studies class as it is a core requirement. However, I am interested in the history and development of women’s rights over the United States, and in other countries around the world. What has always peaked my interest is the fact that even though the entire world is in the 21st century, some countries maintain and reinforce barbaric laws over women as if they were possessions rather than humans. As a result of this class, I would like to gain an understanding as to why that is.
It was nice to meet all of you during the first day of WGS class, and I look forward to working with all of you for the rest of the semester.
Hi, everyone! My name is Sumaya Nasir. I am an American citizen with south-Asian descent, and I use that to my advantage. Ever since I was little, I knew I just wanted to help people. Nothing makes me happier than putting smiles on people’s faces. When I started high school, everything changed. I joined an organization called DRUM. This stands for Desis Rising Up and Moving. DRUM helps people in the south-Asian community with their immigration status, worker status, education, racial profiling, etc. I never knew before DRUM that truly anyone could be undocumented and how they were living in fear. This hurt my heart and I wanted to resolve this. I want people to know that there is someone with a heart that has stuff that they do not and will go the extra mile for them. I want them to know that I want to be their voice and make sure injustice is not happening anymore through gender, social status, color, age, etc. I want to make the world a better place.

I’ve been fond of filmmaking since I was a child and now I’m just trying to reach my goal and become a famous movie director. So, I’m excited to start this new academic year and I hope it’ll go smoothly. Thank you and nice to meet you all.
My name is Jasmine Becerril. I am a freshman at Hunter and intend to major in Nursing. My parents are both from Mexico, a country which I know to be patriarchal. I hope this class broadens my perspective on how and why gender and sexuality play diverse roles in different countries and cultures.
Hello my name is Sarah Bourabah. I am an upper sophomore pursing a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science. My parents are from Morocco which is an Arabic speaking country located in Northern Africa. I have several different passions in life, some of which include programming. I hope I can be able to better understand how operating systems work. I enrolled in this class to gain a better understanding of the history of our genders, and how they have evolved over time.
My name is Leslier Uribe. I am a transfer student from LaGuardia Community College. This is my first semester at Hunter College where I major in Biology. I am from Colombia and I have been living in the U.S for seven years. Coming from a different country and culture gender seem to play an important role because the behavior of people changes depending on their own ideas about gender. Since I am a woman I am interested to learn the various perspectives of the role of women in a society.
My name is Joy Euam and I am a senior nursing student at the Hunter Bellevue School of Nursing. I was born in South Korea and came to the US at the age of 10. Therefore, I sometimes feel that I am part of two different cultures. I am excited to learn about the issue of gender and sexuality and examine it from multiple perspectives, including the impact of culture and race.
